The Perfect DIY Mini Facial

Busy onboard? No time to get to the spa for a well-deserved treatment?

I’m Pippa, chief stewardess turned Bluewater training specialist, and I know how you feel after a busy charter and how you end up neglecting yourself. I spent 5-minutes with Natalie Boddy, from Harmonie Rock Therapy, to get her advice on a DIY facial and the best products to use.

What’s the secret to a good DIY facial?

I specialise in yacht crew massage and beauty courses, as well as giving treatments to yacht crew and their owners, and I love seeing clients leave my studio feeling invigorated and with glowing skin!

I’m happy to share my advice for the perfect DIY facial.

It comprises of cleansing, toning, exfoliating, application of a mask and moisturising.

All of these steps are safe and risk free, as long at the right products are used for every step and are in accordance with your skin type.

I recommend that you have a facial every three or four weeks. This is how long it takes the skin to pass through the full life cycle of skin cell development and exfoliation.
The facial helps the cycle along.

The products should keep your skin smooth, clean and toned.

What are the benefits of a mini facial?

Mini facials give you a subtle glow in a very short time.

Just enough to help you correct small imperfections on the surface of the skin, such as dryness, blackheads, open pores and thin, fine lines.

Giving yourself a mini facial revives back the blood circulation to skin layers to improve skin. It helps in relaxing the facial muscles, which may slow the incipience of wrinkles and the whole process revitalizes skin cells by reducing puffiness and sagging in the face.

Step by step guide for a mini facial

  • Start by gently removing your makeup.
  • Then put a warm, moistened towel on your face for a few minutes, to help with the next step.
  • Use a cleanser to remove all oil and makeup.
  • Use a good toner over the entire face.
  • Exfoliate your face, gently.
  • After exfoliating, use another warm, moistened towel on your face to ensure all exfoliation particles have been removed.
  • Now you’re ready for your mask. Use one appropriate for your skin type, and also to get the results you’re looking for (purifying, hydrating or lifting).
  • Once you remove the mask, use your toner again to complete the mini facial, with a serum to strengthen and nourish the skin.
