The majority of Norway charter yachts cruise the area around Bergen, Stavanger, and Alesund on Norway’s southwest coast, with Hardangerfjord and Geirangerford often considered the most beautiful fjords in the world. Other spectacular fjords in this region include Sognefjord, Romsdalsfjorden, Nordfjord and Nærøyfjord. Further to the south lies the magnificent Lysefjord, home of Pulpit Rock, before cruising round to Oslo, which lies on the fjord of the same name.
Late June to August is certainly the peak time to cruise Norway. In mid summer, the Gulf Stream warms the coast of Norway, bringing temperatures into the low 20s (low 70’s F). Even in the Lofoten Islands, the snows melt away and the landscapes become lush and green under the 24-hour sunlight of the Arctic Circle. While average sea temperatures in Norway generally hover in the mid-teens in summer, some fjords have temps of 20 degrees (68F) in midsummer, perfect for a refreshing dip. It is wise to expect some rainfall and fog during your Norway yacht charter, as the fjords experience quite high rainfall. Occasional gloomy weather only adds to the dramatic, haunting landscape.
In the far north of Norway lies the searing beauty of the Arctic Circle. In the Lofoten Islands, Trollfjord is unmissable for its almost haunting, otherworldly beauty, while even further north is the majesty of Lyngenfjord. Charterers visiting in autumn or early spring can ski or snowboard down the Lyngen Alps directly back to their yacht, the northern lights dancing above them as they slice through the snow. In this land of dramatic mountains and remote islands at the top of the world, this is phenomenal cruising, wild and free.
