Tips from Pippa, our recruitment receptionist

• We specialise in two recruitment methods – traditional recruitment like all other agencies, and the Bluewater One Account with over 300 yachts signed up.

• Any yacht with a ONE Account can access our entire crew database 24/7, with Captains searching for your CV and contacting you directly for jobs.

• Please ensure your profile is UP TO DATE! With your latest CV, correct contact details including country dialling code, references (even land-based ones), and your current location.

• Keep your phone with you at all times, our ONE Account Captains will call you when they are free, and our recruitment agents will occasionally make calls on the weekend for any urgent placements.

• Visiting agencies – look smart, find out what time they conduct interviews – don’t be late, it looks unprepared and unprofessional.

• Look online and check Facebook for daywork, only apply for jobs you are qualified for.

• Stay informed about local events and boat shows, and keep a check on the Bluewater social media pages for upcoming events and offers.

• It is worth dock-walking ahead of an event or boat show, you never know what last minute crew requirements a yacht may have.

• Take a smart polo/t-shirt with you in case you get work. You can buy end-of-line uniform from Liquid at reduced rates.

• When you’re out and about networking or socialising with crew, always behave professionally. The yachting industry is very small and word gets around quickly – good or bad!

Before you visit our agency

Register: Before we can start sending your CV out for potential jobs, please take a couple of minutes to register on our database.

Documents: We need your CV, references & copies of your certificates uploaded, as well as a valid ENG1 certificate.

Check in!: We recommend you check in online at least twice a week, so we know you are still available for work.

Your crew interview: Once you have registered with us, please come to our recruitment offices in Palma, Antibes or Fort Lauderdale, to meet with the crew agents. We don’t take any appointments due to the high demand of crew interviews.

Our offices are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 12pm for interviews with crew who have some experience, and 12pm is for the ’’new to yachting’’ crew meeting (in Antibes only during April and May).

In the event it is not possible to come to our offices, please do not hesitate to give us a ring or drop us an email with your career requirements or job enquiries.

When to dockwalk

Dock-walking
The best way for new crew to find work is to dockwalk (going to the ports to give out CVs directly to the yachts) to find daywork, which will help you to gain yachting experience and help you to make contacts which may lead to a permanent position.

When should I start dockwalking
We are busiest with new jobs before the Med Summer season starts, from Mid April - end of May, and then again from Mid September & October as yachts re-crew for the Winter season (usually chartering in the US & Caribbean or remaining in port for the winter in the Med).

Securing your first job
The yachting industry is a very competitive industry, and therefore to get your first job on a yacht will require time and effort. There are lots of new crew each season looking for work, but there are lots of jobs available too so don’t be discouraged.

Keep learning and adding to your CV
Consider some introductory courses to boost your CV and skills, no pre-requisites needed.
Deck - Power Boat Level II, Entry Level Deck Week
Engineering - Approved Engine Course (AEC)
Interior - The Entry Programme (GUEST I)
Galley - Food Hygiene (HABC Level 2)

Dock-walking in the South of France
As well as Antibes, visit Nice, Cannes, Golfe Juan, Monaco, Marina Baie des Anges and even head off to Italy to San Remo, Viareggio and Imperia. Not forgetting La Ciotat in the autumn when a lot of boats are based there for shipyard work and may need some extra hands.

Dock-walking in Palma
There are three main areas for dock walking in Mallorca – the marinas in the bay of Palma, Puerto Portals and Port Adriano. The marinas and shipyards in the bay of Palma are all gated so it’s important to dock walk discreetly, always in neat uniform and go about it alone. Crew dock walking in groups are likely to be asked to leave by security.

Dock-walking in South Florida
Only American citizens, green card holders, and work authorization visa holders are legal to walk the docks and look for work in the USA. Fort Lauderdale is an excellent choice as there are many marinas and boatyards with large yachts. We believe Bahia Mar, Hall of Fame, Pier 66, and the Marriot Hotel and Marina are the best places to start. There are several marinas from Miami all the way up to West Palm Beach which are gated or only allow guests by appointment only, we do encourage you to visit each place to see for yourself, meet the person at the gate/frontdesk, and leave a resume or business cards, if they will allow it.
The weeks leading up to a boat show is an excellent time to go dock walking as well, South Florida has 3 major shows Miami Yacht Show, Palm Beach Boat Show and Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. For a full list of marinas and boatyards please email the Fort Lauderdale office.
