Frejus Visit Historic Frejus on your yachting holiday

Frejus has an interesting history dating back to the Roman Empire and Julius Cesar, when it became established as an important port. The town was then known as Forum Juli, which means the market of Julius. Frejus has many interesting historical monuments to visit and the Malpasset dam.

The surrounding countryside of the Massif L'Esterel Mountains is fantastic to explore on foot, bike or horse. The Port of Frejus has moorings for 750 yachts, with modern and well maintained yacht facilities, and beaches which are clean and sandy.

In 49 B.C when Julius Cesar and his army settled here it was whilst a road was being built to connect Italy to Spain and is known as the Adrian Way. It was one of the most important ports on this part of the coast at that time bringing supplies to the town. Then the town was 900 meters from the port, and 460meters to the sea, connected by a canal. The entrance to the port was marked by the Latern of Augustus, which can still be seen today. The old port was a substantial size and used to have ships which had been captured in the Battle of Actium held here before being taken to Queen Cleopatra in 32 BC. It is one of the most important historical maritime Roman sites in the world. Now the harbour has been silted up by the River Argens and the sea is 1.2km from the town.

The oldest surviving Roman ruins are the arena of Gaul, the ampitheatre, the arcades of the Oree Gate and the remains of the arches of the aqueduct, although there are numerous other historical monuments. Take a look around the old thirteenth century church called St Maximinius which has many treasures and tombs dating back to the early Christian times. The town and surrounding area is full of medieval history, which is why it is such as interesting place to visit. There are many traditional crafts and art exhibitions as well as town fairs held throughout the year.

In 1989 the new Port of Frejus was officially opened, thereby giving the town back its old maritime connections. In the Mayors opening speak he referred back to the disaster in 1959 when the Malpasset Dam burst and many people of the town were killed in the torrents. During the ports construction other Roman artifacts were discovered like the arc to some second century baths and other bathhouses at the original Roman town site. Around the new port are spacious apartments with beautiful waterside views, shops and restaurants which contrast well to the medieval stone houses and cobbled roads in the old town.

In August for the first three Fridays the port hosts its annual firework display. It is a spectacular event and starts at around 10.30pm and lasts for around half an hour. Arrive early and get a good spot along the quay or in a restaurant. The town also has a number of traditional feasts, like the feast of the Giant Omlette. This is when the chefs all get together and make an omlette big enough to feed the town. It is great fun.

Outside the town the beaches offer long expanses of white soft sand and are over one kilometer long. With the influence of the predominantly westerly winds the beaches have become popular places for windsurfing, parascending and jet biking. It is a perfect place to practice and there are plenty of clubs and instructors to help you improve.

Whether you just want a few days here or wish to stay longer the Bluewater is at your service to fulfill all your yachting holiday requirements.
