The Yachts That Make Westport Great
In February 2006 a Donald Starkey designed tri-deck composite motor yacht called “Vongo” saw the day. It was the shipyards largest yacht in its range, a 50m Westport 164 accommodating 12 guests. Starkey, possibly the best-known European designer of yachts commented that “The 50m Westport matched anything built elsewhere and would become recognized as a major step in American yacht building. Later that year, hull #2 was delivered, built in Port Angeles, Washington.
The Yard
Westport’s status as the largest yacht builder in North America yields a number of advantages in terms of the level of service they can offer clients and the quality of their products. They remain a pioneer in the use of composite materials in yacht and commercial construction and since 1964 to the present day, has completed a total exceeding 160 yachts and many commercial vessels.
The Westport boat yard facilities and office are based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. They maintain a large in-house design and development of naval architects, marine engineers and design specialists. Yachts are built at three separate specialized facilities in order to meet the highest standards, plus a specialized Westport carpentry and cabin shop serves yard operations with exquisite joinery worthy of the most lavish custom builds.
Many veterans with decades of experience make up the skilled workforce and spans generations of employee families. This has become a signature trademark of the Westport brand and the assurance of first-class workmanship and a well-built yacht.
