This operational-level course focuses on the knowledge and skills needed to be an effective team member and leader. Using a combination of lectures, case studies, group table-top exercises, and practical problem-solving tasks, students will learn how to prioritise tasks, motivate individuals, and foster an effective team ethic.

  1. Understanding the Human Element
    • Recognise the importance of the human element in the maritime industry.
  2. Communication and Teamwork
    • Identify the significance of teamwork and effective communication.
    • Understand barriers, enabling factors, and skills for good teamwork.
  3. Performance Influencing Factors (PIFs)
    • Define PIFs and their human element impact.
    • Learn to mitigate human-related risks.
  4. Situational Awareness
    • Maintain and analyse situational awareness.
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.
  5. Decision Making and Risk Management
    • Grasp the decision-making process and perceptual biases.
    • Apply this understanding to personal decision-making.
  6. Creating a Safety Culture
    • Identify generative safety culture characteristics.
    • Motivate safe performance, identify risks, and appropriately challenge safety risks.

This operational level certificate is required for tickets up to OOW < 3000gt and for SV EOOW engineers. If you are only re-validating your CoC, you do not need to do this course. However, if you are moving up to the next level ticket (e.g. from Master 200gt to OOW), you will be required to take the course if you haven’t already done so.
