This essential course provides all deck personnel with the foundational knowledge and hands-on skills required for safe and effective deck operations. Over five days, participants will develop a broad range of maritime competencies, from tying essential knots and lashings to more advanced techniques such as splicing, whipping, rigging stages, and handling derricks.
Practical training includes the correct use of berthing lines on bitts, capstans, and windlasses, as well as the selection and application of appropriate stoppers for secure mooring. The course also covers the characteristics and uses of different types of rope, safe working load calculations, the importance of test certificates, and the implementation of the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers on deck.
The programme runs over four days of intensive instruction, followed by a comprehensive oral and practical assessment on the fifth day. To make the most of the course, candidates are strongly advised to arrive with a working knowledge of standard nautical knots.
Please note: As of January 2017, an EDH certificate must be held for a minimum of 18 months before applying for the Officer of the Watch (OOW) Certificate of Competency.
