At Bluewater, we focus on bringing attention to initiatives that combine the luxury and worldwide influence of the yachting business with philanthropic efforts. An initiative that is truly making waves is Relief Crew, which connects yacht crew ready to volunteer with nonprofit organizations doing humanitarian and environmental work.

This groundbreaking initiative is not only putting "boots on the ground" in nonprofits that need manpower but is also creating pathways for yacht owners and others in the yachting business to support charitable causes.

The Mission Behind Relief Crew

Relief Crew tackles two urgent problems. The first is that non-profit organisations need skilled workers and money. The second is that yacht crew want work with meaning, and in what way is there more meaning than doing good in the world? Relief Crew connects the yacht crew world and the non-profit world through an initiative that has crew volunteering their skills and time. This is also a way for yacht owners and the yachting industry to fund good initiatives that really do good in the world.

The Challenges Faced by the Industry

Across the yachting and non-profit sectors, there are significant challenges that Relief Crew seeks to solve:

  • Non-Profit NGOs: Many organisations lack the human and financial resources needed to maximise their impact. The shortage of skilled labour limits their output, and securing reliable funding remains a constant struggle.
  • Captains & Yacht Management: Retaining quality crew is a challenge, with many captains spending too much time on recruitment. Crew churn not only adds costs, but when you lose good crew, you lose their skills and boat-specific knowledge, which poses a risk to the vessel and the guest experience.
  • Yacht Crew: For numerous crew members, purposeful methods of utilizing their time off are tough to find. They might be uncertain of how to leverage their abilities for a worthy cause or which charity they can have faith in to make a difference.
  • Yacht Owners & Industry Businesses: The mounting pressure to offset the environmental and social impacts of yachting has - in tandem with our beloved industry - driven in a new direction. Owners now want to engage in philanthropic work and seek trusted, aligned partners to do so.

How Relief Crew Solves These Problems

Relief Crew offers a unique solution by connecting skilled yacht crew with on-the-ground volunteer opportunities. Crew members spend a minimum of two weeks volunteering and, in doing so, can introduce their networks - including yacht owners - to trusted NGOs for further support. This approach provides a structured, reliable way to engage with humanitarian projects while addressing the needs of all parties involved:

  • NGOs benefit from the additional human and financial resources, allowing them to increase their output and help more people in need.
  • Yacht Crew gain a renewed sense of purpose and connection to humanity, returning to their vessels grounded, grateful, and with broadened horizons.
  • Yacht Owners & Industry Affiliates see an improvement in crew retention while fulfilling their environmental and social responsibilities through a values-aligned, philanthropic outlet.

Making a Tangible Difference

  • Crew Retention: Crew that return from volunteer experiences bring a new sense of investment to their roles onboard a yacht. This crew dynamic not only has the potential to enhance the quality of life onboard, but it may also impact the owner’s bottom line—reducing costs associated with crew churn.
  • NGO Support: Through the extra labour and capital provided by the Relief Crew network, partner NGOs are able to take on more projects and scale their efforts.
  • Industry Perception: The yachting industry is enhancing its global reputation and showcasing its steadfast commitment to social and environmental responsibilities by taking part in significant and worthwhile humanitarian not-for-profit work.

Ambitious Goals for Growth

They want the yachting industry to be synonymous with humanitarian initiatives and see a big picture where it’s the norm for yachts to support projects that help communities in genuine need worldwide.

They have been approached by many vessels with this mindset where owners are looking for projects to support and encourage crew involvement where possible.

Looking ahead, Relief Crew has ambitious goals for growth

Help Us Bridge the Gap

Relief Crew has its first two years funded thanks to a donor who is generous and shares the vision of making a positive impact and who helped the yachting industry become involved with that vision. That means 100% of donations go and will go directly to the projects and communities involved and are making a difference in those communities.

For yacht owners, crew, and industry professionals, Relief Crew offers a way to give back to the world that carries trust and impact.
