John Wyborn is a director of Bluewater, a yacht brokerage, charter and management company and a provider of crew training and placement services to a large proportion of the yacht crew population. He is Bluewater’s representative at MYBA (the worldwide yachting association), is on the council of the Professional Yachting Association (PYA) and is Deputy Chairman of the International Association of Maritime Institutions (IAMI). He joined the Royal Navy as a seaman officer after university and served on various types of vessels including frigates, destroyers, and finally in command of HMS Mentor; a navigation and seamanship training vessel teaching RN trainees and foreign navies.
In 1991, he co-founded bluewater, continuing his training role by building the largest training provider dedicated to our industry.

Superyacht UK Technical Seminar 2017

I represented the PYA at the Superyacht UK Technical Seminar at the London Boat show this year. Superyacht UK (SUK) are part of a trade organisation, British Marine, which represents leisure yachting companies and the wider boat building and marine supply sector in the UK. SUK is focused on UK-based service providers to our industry; brands like Pendennis, Sunseeker, Princess and Fairline and a host of legal, insurance and technical companies.

Bluewater Chef Competition Winner!

Tyrone Hardie, 26, was the winner of the 2016 Bluewater Chef Competition. Held at ‘Secrets de Cuisine’ in Antibes, the competition was sponsored by Gourmet Deliveries. The 12 contestants (the competition was well over-subscribed) fought a very close battle this year and showed a real mix of styles.

What should MYBA do now that it is a member of the UK Maritime Skills Alliance?

This is a discussion paper to provoke debate about what we, the superyacht industry, expect and require from young people beginning their careers with us. Our sector of the maritime world has grown so large now that we can no longer ignore this. This paper represents my personal views and not those of any organisation with which I am associated.
