The direct assessment is available for students with at least one season’s worth of powerboat experience and is only available on a one to one basis.

The candidate must complete the practical exercise and satisfactorily answer questions on subjects below.

Section B

Theory knowledge of:

Types of craft: Advantages & disadvantages of different hull forms with respect to sea keeping ability
Seating arrangements
Stepped hulls
Engines & drives: advantages and disadvantages of outboard, inboard & outdrive units, single & twin shaft drives, choice of fuels
Siting of fuel tanks, fuel lines, batteries, wiring, fire extinguishers
Routine engine maintenance checks, basic fault diagnosis
Close down procedure
Advice to inland drivers about coastal waters
Use & limitations of GPS/Chart plotters
Application of local byelaws, especially around commercial shipping
Sources of weather information
Understands:

Awareness of other water users
Communication with other craft – hand & sound signals
Disabled craft
Emergency action – preventing sinking
Adrift – alternative means of propulsion
Towing & being towed
Fire precautions & fire fighting
Rope work
Distress signals & the Mayday call
Advice for vessels in restricted visibility
Can:

Apply IRPCS, principally rules 5, 7, 8, 9, 12-18



Section C

Coastal knowledge of:

Byelaws & local regulations
Insurance
Understands:

Pilotage & passage planning
Charts, chart symbols, buoyage systems
Tides & tidal streams


Can: Apply Section A on coastal waters (from Powerboat Logbook)

Launching & recovery
Securing to a buoy
Leaving and coming alongside
Anchoring
Boat handling
Use steering and hand bearing compass
Man overboard
