I Work Out! Excercising Onboard...

There are many ways of accidentally putting on excess weight while working on board yachts.

We all know that meal times while working onboard yachts can be very unscheduled and a bit all over the place, especially on yacht charter or during busy spells. Indulging in the delicious ‘easy to get your hands on’ foods such as, bread, cheese bites, chocolate bars, cookies and those other moreish delights that hang around in your crew mess become extremely easy.

Another aspect of an unhealthy regime onboard is when you have a busy yacht charter and you don’t have time to sit down, enjoy your meal or digest it normally.

It’s very easy to substitute meals with unhealthy snacking.

The other slight problem that comes with yachting is, that you don’t make your own food. You have a talented yacht chef that does this for you. Obviously this is beyond fabulous however as everyone's metabolism works differently, not being in control of what you are eating is often not so fabulous…

In every-day life while not working on yachts we have ways of controlling our weight; going to the gym, running, purchasing organic foods, eating the correct amounts at the right times. All of these factors come into play while watching our weight can be very hard, if not impossible to control onboard!

Do not be defeated, try and work around this you will need to make the best of the situation… A healthy crew is a happy crew!

Good food choices are most important. You have to be strong and avoid the sugary, wonderfully calorific delights (if your chef has chosen to make them), and try to opt for the healthier option. Fatty foods onboard will slow your fitness and fatigue down, make you tired, and make your uniforms tighter!
Alcohol intake is another evil that will pile on the pounds, collect calories, as well as bring your mood down a notch the next day…

If you get those 3-4 days off that you have been waiting all season for, and decide to go on a drinking binge, think again!

It will leave you run down, depressed, bloated and unhappy. Have a few wild nights out, but everything in moderation! Why not try finding a hobby that you can do wherever your itinerary takes you, that doesn’t involve heavy drinking benders. Have those crazy nights out at the end of your charter, but also find something else to fill your time.

Going back to work after a 4-day bender, feeling awful, with empty pockets and nothing to show for it is very disappointing!
Feel fresh and have the best of both worlds!

Exercise is the key - if you have a guest free boat, make the most of it! Use the spare space on board the boat to stretch out with some yoga or a one-hour work out. Get yourself into a routine that you feel comfortable with, and integrate it into your daily schedule; you could start by making a diet and fitness plan for yourself. Even hop off the boat and go running, it’s a great way to keep fit and explore the amazing places you are docked.

Finding a fitness buddy or group on board is good for team morale and also motivates you to to exercise even more. It’s very easy to just decide to not do any fitness if you have had a long day, but if there is a few of you, there is more motivation!

If you aren't so fortunate to have the guests off very much, then use the 30-40 minutes before bed to work out every night (or whenever you get to sleep). Some people find it very hard to switch off after running around on a busy charter, and sometimes use the television to put themselves to sleep… wrong! This can keep you more awake. Some quick yoga and stretches before bed can help you relax faster for a deep sleep, while toning you up!

Whenever you have some spare time, do some exercise! It has been proven to stimulate various brain chemicals that improve your mood and after that super long charter, it’s great therapy!

Keep your crew as happy and healthy as possible, a positive work environment is the key to success!
