The objective of this course is to provide students with basic theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on experience with workshop related activities to enable them to meet the requirements of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) towards the Engineer Officer of the Watch Small Vessel Certificate of Competency.

This 70-hour course does not attempt to make qualified welders, plumbers or fitter and turner engineers of the course participants, but should enable students to carry out regular workshop activities safely and be more competent in the use of hand and power tools, undertaking basic repairs and the production of basic components and systems found on Small Vessels.

It will also serve to:

  • Enhance assembly and disassembly techniques.
  • Improve basic maintenance knowledge and skills required onboard.
  • Increase knowledge of inspection procedures

This course may be completed prior to enrollment onto the programme. However, if you do complete it before registration on the SV programme, it does not count towards the seagoing service requirement post registration.
