ON JULY 2004 THE “INTERNATIONAL SHIP AND PORT FACILITY SECURITY CODE” CAME INTO FORCE.
This code was adopted last December including a new amendment to Chapter XI of SOLAS, which brings into force the International Ship and Port Security Code. The code will apply to vessels over 500 gt from 1st July 2004, including charter yachts. The code formally requires certain actions by ship crew in terms of onboard organization, security plans, risk assessments, physical security equipment and training. The UK Merchant Navy Training Board have formulated a syllabus for a Shipboard Security Officer’s Course which will be controlled by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Blue Water is MCA approved to run this course and will also be able to help with other aspects of code compliance.
