In fact much of the island is of volcanic origin and its geology shows it to be older than even mainland Italy. The forest of oaks and pines which once covered the island were largely deforested in the 19th century. These fertile plains are now a source for providing most of the grain for the country’s bread making industry. Sardinia makes more shapes and sizes of bread than France!
Sailing around the Sardinian coast shows how varied the coastal regions are. The views from the sea of long beaches, marshes and lagoons are enhanced by mountains which come sheer down to the translucent coves and inlets. In the remaining forested areas wild boar are plentiful and one can often see pink flamingos migrating, eagles, peregrine falcons and on Asinara Island are the world’s only albino donkeys.
