Tenerife

The largest of the Canary Islands

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and noted for having two airports in the north and south of the island as well as having its highest mountain, named Mount Teile, snow covered in winter.

Tourism is an all-the-year feature due to the attractive climate, charming villages and wonderful coastal scenery. The island’s historic link to Nelson and the islander’s defence of its capital Santa Cruz, accounts for the fact that a street has been named after him. The coastal ports of Puerto de la Cruz (called Puerto for short) and the capital city, Santa Cruz, are both important docking places for cruise ships. The multicoloured beaches around the island are best explored by boat or chartered luxury yacht. The major motorway links both airports to Puerto de la Cruz on the west coast.

If planning to explore the island by boat then Bluewater Charter Department are ready to help and advise. For a relaxing holiday the Department’s brokers will help chose an appropriate boat and solve any language problems. For viewing the six best beaches and spending a little time ashore at each, then charter a yacht to tour the whole island. From the capital it is possible to check the weather, the sea conditions and suitable up-to-date tourist maps. Santa Cruz is a very cosmopolitan city with lots of nightclubs. It is also a good place to pick up local news about festivals and carnivals.

The beaches of Tenerife
Heading out of Santa Cruz to circumnavigate the island anti-clockwise, the next port to anchor will be 6 miles from the capital at ’Playa de Teresitas’ one of the most popular beaches since being enlarged and bedecked with palm trees. This beach has a 100 yard wide stretch of Saharan sand and the only developments are in the nearby fishing village of San Andre If not anchoring in this area, sail around the lighthouse (Faro de Anaga) down to the beach close to Puerto de la Cruz called ’Playa de Jardin’. This beach has been split into three areas by large rocks giving an element of seclusion to the sunbathers. Puerto itself is the second largest marina on the island and its fish restaurants are recommended. The lagoon, Lago Martinez is worth a visit. It is a complex of cascading fountains and tropical plants designed by the island’s celebrated architect Ceasar Manrique.

The next beach to explore on the west side of the island is ’Playa San Marcos’ which is some 12.5 miles from Puerto and lies on the outskirts of the fishing village. Also nearby is the fishing village of Garachico that lies on a small peninsular formed in 1706 from petrified larva. This accounts for the black sandy beaches in this area. The local 16th Century castle however survived the eruption.
Heading out of San Marco and navigating the most westerly point of the island called ’Punto de Teno’leads to the ’Playa de los Americas’ which are a series of small sandy beaches with a small aquarium on the main Promenade and excellent amenities elsewhere. This beach is very near to its neighbouring beach of ’Playa de los Cristianos’ which is a 400-yard long beach perfect for families with young children and noticeably equipped with a nearby Aquapark and beachside bars which are mainly English or German. Go-kart racing is also available at a site off the nearby motorway. From the beach whale-spotting trips are now in vogue. Closer to the airport (Aeropuerto Reina Sofia) but off the motorway is one of the best wind-surfing beaches called ’Playa de El Medano.’ This is the venue for World windsurfing championships and has local amenities for windsurfing equipment.

Moving along the west coast towards the island’s capital we have a dark sandy beach called ’Playa de Roque’ and its nearby town of Fasnia. This beach has strong currents and fine for experienced surfers but not youngsters. Waterfront restaurants and coffee shops are popular with sunbathers and provide authentic Spanish cuisine.
