Lanzarote is the most easterly island in the Canaries. The first visitors to the islands were thought to be Arab sailors who landed in Gran Canaria some 2,000 years ago. The first Europeans landed in the 17th Century, when the Genoese Marcello Lanzarotto colonised the island (hence the name).
Being only 60 miles from the African mainland it has a mixed Spanish-Moroccan culture reflected in its cuisine and buildings. Lanzarote is surprisingly different from its sister island of Fuertaventura which has less shelter from the Sahara winds. In the central and eastern coast of Lanzarote the countryside is pockmarked with extinct volcanoes and resembles a lunar landscape. The weather is normally over 20 degrees C all the year round and rainfall less than 150 mm/year. Arrecife on the east coast is the port of arrival for most visitors and popular with yachting enthusiasts.
Lanzarote is one of the smallest islands in the Canaries and can easily be explored around a coastline that has good marinas, multicoloured beaches and a tourism that only started in the late 1980s. If planning to do this, there is no better way than chartering a motor yacht through Bluewater Charter Department. For a really relaxing holiday the appropriate boat is very important and their brokers will readily help with the choices available and solve any language problems.
Arrecife is distinguished by its two castles on either side of the largest port on the island. To tour by circumnavigating the island it is necessary to sail down the east coast and bypass the airport and its Matagorda beach. Continuing along the coast the unmistakable beach called “Playa de los Pocillos” with its 2.5 miles of golden sand, signals the time to explore the most popular tourist resort and where it is easy to anchor in the bay. The old town to the west of the beach has a small charming harbour with plenty of bars and restaurants. On the hill above it there is the Montaña Tropical a complex of shops and nightclubs if flamenco dancing is your passion. To continue around the coast, the southern tip of the island (Punta del Papagayo) is noted for its variety of beaches and coves and from its marina nearby at Playa Blanca the tour ferries to Fuertaventura leave at regular intervals. The 4-star hotel “Hotel los Fariones” is recommended if staying overnight to explore the Flamingo Park.
Exploring the west coast by leaving Playa Blanca and heading for the beginning of the island’s National Park involves passing the lighthouse at Punta Pechiguera and following the rocky coastline past the salt flats at “Salinas de Janubio.” Fishing along this coast is popular and El Golfo is noted for its lagoon under an overhanging cliff and for its fish restaurants. The spectacular shape of its black beach and unusual mountain backdrop is due to the fact that it was originally half of an active volcano. Tourist trips by car and camel can be made to the most famous volcanic region on the island (Montañas del Fuego) where food at the restaurant is cooked over the heat from the volcano. However it is some 8 Km from El Golfo and a whole day is needed to enjoy this luxury.
Moving up the west coast there are some tricky currents at the beaches of San Juan and Playa de Famara and the scenery changes as one circumnavigates the northern channel between Lanzarote and the tiny island of Graciosa. The number of yachts and ferryboats rather favours anchoring at Caleta del Sebo on this small island. Navigating the northern tip of Lanzarote leads along a series of beaches and rocky coves back to the beach adjacent to the capital Arrecife, namely Playa de los Cucharas. This is a good beach for swimming, a useful marina and a nearby golf course at Teguise.
