Gibraltar and the Straits of Gibraltar is already a familiar landmark for those who have explored the Mediterranean on luxury Cruise ships.

It has excellent harbours called the North and South Mole close to an adjacent Airstrip with its underpass road leading through neutral ground on the Spanish mainland. The facilities and mooring inside a harbour area of approximately 2,000 square kilometres can easily cope with luxury yachts of any size. Once ashore, what looks like the one immense rock is found to be a city with an imposing Moorish Castle, two Cathedrals, two Botanical gardens and a National Park with valleys, swamplands, designated water fishing areas and more.

Exploring Gibraltar City is easily tackled by short “walk-about” tours particularly if you have entered the City via Air customs or boat customs to the north of the harbour. Taxis are available and the drivers are a fund of information if short tours or trips around Gibraltar’s local attractions are planned. The first site to greet you as you step ashore past the old Port, is Casemates Square, named after the British Barracks that used to be there. Now it is a hub of social activities such as eating-out restaurants, cafes and shops. Overlooking Casemates Square is the imposing Moorish Castle. It now houses Gibraltar’s short-term prison inmates but the castle itself dates back to the 8th Century and consisted of a series of fortified walls, gates and buildings of which the “Tower of Homage” is worth checking. The tower was built on the orders of the Arab Governor in 1068 with inner and outer walls and a splendid Gatehouse. The Gatehouse was probably built on part of the original Moorish Castle. From here it is 10 minute walk down past the Post Office to the two Cathedrals one in Main Street and the other in Wall Road. The Anglican Cathedral, Holy Trinity, was built in 1838 and linked to the diocese of Gibraltar in 1842. Services take place daily with morning and evening prayers. The information centre adjacent to Holy Trinity will be able to provide information on Sunday services in both cathedrals.

The other “must-see” tourist attraction is the Alameda Botanical Gardens situated near the entrance to the Cable Car lift. The Gardens were originally established as a recreational park in 1816 and it was not until 1991 that it was converted to a botanical garden with the “Dell” and various water features. The garden attracts a lot of visitors seeking a tranquil conservation area and a chance to check out the local and North African flora. The Dell is an Italian-style garden with fountains, a waterfall and ponds surrounded amongst other plants of bougainvillea, jasmine, nettle trees and date palms. For the bird lover this is the place to watch and photograph green flinches and Sardinian Warblers.

Since Gibraltar’s cable car is nearby, and provided it is not Sunday when the restaurant is closed, this is a good opportunity to make a breathtaking trip to the top of the Rock, stopping off at Stage 1 for a visit to the Ape’s Den and St Michael’s cave. Reclining at the exit restaurant gives a chance to view the highest point on the peninsular and the North African coastline.

For the intrepid yachtsman who wishes to see the five beaches, the coves and the other small towns which encircle the Gibraltar peninsular it is necessary to either hire a car of charter a yacht. If it is the latter then contact Bluewater Charter Department and our expert brokers will be happy to advise and book you a luxury yacht and help with your holiday planning.
